For the last eight years, Reader's Digest has enlisted a select group of judges to determine which places are the nicest in the country after soliciting suggestions from their audience.
This year, Silver Spring made the list, which was topped by Provo, Utah, piggy-backing off its listing as "best place to live for families" in a Fortune report.
"We started as we always do: by asking you, our readers, to be our scouts around the country and send us your nominations for the nicest places you know," according to the Reader's Digest report.
"Our editorial team vets each place carefully, whittling down the list with the help of our panel of judges, who know a thing or two about niceness themselves."
In Silver Spring, author Caroline Fanning highlighted some of the city's residents, calling it "a hub for immigrants and refugees."
"l’s fall in 2021 saw an influx of refugees to Silver Spring, a Washington, DC, suburb of about 80,000," she wrote.
"It’s home to families, young professionals, retirees like Vera, and a large community of immigrants and refugees raring to make Montgomery County home."
